Rising Tide Capital has been the local organizer of GEW in Jersey City for the past five years. This year, they introduced the Start Something Challenge along with a number of other events to celebrate. During GEW, on Monday November 12th, the semi-finals and finals of The Challenge were held at Saint Peter's University in NJ.
The Start Something Challenge provided New Jersey entrepreneurs with the opportunity to pitch their business ideas in front of a panel of acclaimed judges for a chance to win not only prizes towards their business but resources to start and grow a successful company. The winner of the Challenge, Moira Brett of Jersey City was awarded $10,000 at the first annual Start Something Challenge Champions Gala on Friday, December 14th.
The winning company, GreenShave, is unisex line of shaving cream created when Brett experimented with soap-making in her free time. Brett was stunned when she won the cash prize after impressing judges with her business pitch. She says she will use the money to kickstart the mass-production of her product to hopefully allow it reach more people.
“I am thrilled because now I can use the winnings towards contract manufacturing to get the product made,” Brett said. “It’s expensive to get a lab to make it for me and this money will definitely go towards that expense.”
Brett hopes to eventually develop other skin care products and different scents. She also wants to get her product certified “organic” so she can sell it at stores like Whole Foods. She plans to spend most of her free time making the shave cream something bigger and hopes to eventually devote all her time to GreenShave.
