The purpose of this workshop is to explore ways of expanding Northeastern University’s participation in the SBIR/STTR programs. According to the official U.S. Government SBIR website, “The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization. Through a competitive awards-based program, SBIR enables small businesses to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization.” The Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program is similar to the SBIR program, but requires companies to team with universities. Since 1983, Massachusetts companies have won 18,906 awards for a total of nearly $4.6B. On average since that time, Massachusetts received 650 awards per year and is second only to California. The workshop will start with an overview of the SBIR/STTR program, first from the perspective of the Department of Defense (DOD), followed by the National Institute of Health (NIH).
