Tennessee Business Retention & Expansion Course

Jackson, Tennessee

16 November 2011-18 November 2011

The majority of new jobs are created by existing firms, rather than by attracting new firms to a community. According to the State of Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, 79 percent of all new jobs in the state in 2009 resulted from the expansion of existing business and industry. These statistics emphasize the importance of a comprehensive approach to economic development that includes strategies for business retention and expansion, recruitment, and new business development. When existing businesses close or relocate, they leave a void in the community. While business closures, downsizings and relocations may be unpreventable, a business retention and expansion (BRE) program can help community leaders work together to identify and address barriers local businesses face as they try to survive and grow. And, a BRE program can connect existing business and industry to resources at local, state, and regional levels that can help improve their economic competitiveness and profitability. WHO SHOULD ATTEND? The Tennessee Business Retention and Expansion Course is designed for community leaders, economic development practitioners, and stakeholders who are interested in the process of retaining and growing existing businesses in their local community and region. Workshop beneficiaries include: chamber of commerce and economic and community development organization professionals, elected officials, government agency staff, community planners, utility personnel, business leaders, real estate brokers and developers, community volunteers, and anyone interested in promoting a healthy and vibrant local economy. LOCATION AND DATE November 16-17, 2011, in Jackson, TN The Tennessee Business Retention and Expansion (TBRE) Course will be held at The University of Tennessee’s West Tennessee Research and Education Center , 605 Airways Blvd., in Jackson, Tennessee. The program will begin in the afternoon on Wednesday, November 16, and will conclude Thursday evening. On-site check-in will take place from 11:30 to 1:00 on Wednesday, November 16. COURSE FEE $250 by November 11, 2011 The registration fee covers course materials, instruction, selected meals and refreshment breaks. It does not cover hotel and other travel expenses. Registration is limited to 40 participants and is filled on a first come-first served basis. Registration and payment must be received no later than Friday, November 11th.
