The Professional-in-Residence (PIR) program connects University of Hawaii students and faculty with local business professionals. Besides education beyond the classroom, students receive valuable insight about a specific industry.
GEW 2011
Breakthrough Innovation Challenge

The Breakthrough Innovation Challenge provides University of Hawaii students and faculty the opportunity to 1) bring attention and recognition to their innovations; 2) network with community leaders and others who may be helpful in the further development of the innovation; and 3) win cash prizes. Competitors first submit a 2-minute video that describes their innovation. After a preliminary judging, the top videos are selected to move on to a final round. Finalists are paired with a business coach, who will assist the team with a pitch that describes the potential commercial application of the innovation. Finalists will present their pitches and compete for cash prizes on November 17 at the Shidler College of Business.
PACE Entrepreneurs Roundtable

PACE Entrepreneurs are a group of creative and entrepreneurial-minded students at the University of Hawaii. This small group of students receives specialized mentorship that helps each student fulfill an entrepreneurial aspirations. On November 17, the Fall 2011 PACE Entrepreneurs will discuss a specific entrepreneurial topic, and then each student will share their entrepreneurial dilemma in a roundtable discussion.
Professional-in-Residence of the Week

The Professional-in-Residence (PIR) program connects University of Hawaii students and faculty with local business professionals. PIRs provide free consultation on any entrepreneurial or general business issue during half-hour appointments. Piia Aarma, a marketing and branding expert with Pineapple Tweed, will be the featured PIR on November 17.
Mahalo Mixer

The Mahalo Mixer is a networking event that gives students in the University of Hawaii Entrepreneurs' Club the opportunity to meet local business professionals. The evening's program includes a networking activity in which students and professionals chat in small groups, and then rotate in 10-minute increments.
Hoku Scientific Microloan Pitch Presentations

The Hoku Scientific Microloan Fund is a loan program for University of Hawaii students who want to start a business or develop a proof-of-concept. Loans of up to $5,000 are available at a nominal interest rate for a term of one year. Students who apply for the loan will present their business pitches to a loan board for approval on November 14 at the Shidler College of Business.
