Innovation in a Time of Healthcare Reform

Boston, Massachusetts

16 November 2012-17 November 2012

12 pm - 1:30 pm Hosted by: Center for Research Innovation. This panel will pull together different perspectives of those on campus involved with innovation centered on healthcare. This is a particularly exciting topic as the Affordable Care Act has provided many opportunities for researchers to receive federal funding to create new technology surrounding cost containment and medical effectiveness and efficiency. Panelists include: -a Professor in Healthcare Engineering who can discuss the broader movement and vision of health-related initiatives and grant opportunities born out of the movement. -a researcher/inventor on campus who is doing work related to the furtherance of healthcare and fulfilling the mission of movement. -a patent attorney who will speak upon trends he is seeing the filing of patents related to healthcare. -an administrator who is involved in promoting research on campus who will speak on grant opportunities for those on campus. These perspectives combined will likely inspire student entrepreneurs who are interested in health, business and intellectual property to participate in a movement likely only to get bigger as healthcare continuously developing in the United States. International Entrepreneurship Center Workshop

Boston, Massachusetts

16 November 2012-17 November 2012

2 pm - 4 pm Hosted by: Bob Caspe. Sponsored by: The International Entrepreneurship Center. Are you considering starting your own business? Are you an entrepreneur? Do you want to be one? This seminar is essential to improving your probability for success. An entrepreneur’s most precious asset - time - is best spent with potential customers (“customer centricity”) rather than writing a business plan. Learn about the “search selling” method to uncover customer pain points, identify business opportunities and propose transactions for market validation. Discover why angel and venture capital is often detrimental to business success. Host Bob Caspe has been a successful founder and entrepreneur of multiple companies in different markets. Before co-founding the International Entrepreneurship Center earlier this year, Bob was an Adjunct Professor in the MBA Entrepreneurship Program at Babson College and was twice nominated as Teacher of the Year during his seven-year tenure. The IEC is a Newton, MA based shared office/incubator/hatchery/accelerator where start-up and early stage companies can find mentoring, resources, relationships, experience and expertise to realize success. SBIR/STTR for Entrepreneurial Faculty

Boston, Massachusetts

15 November 2012-16 November 2012

12 pm - 2 pm Hosted by: Center for Research Innovation and Research Development & Strategic Projects. The purpose of this workshop is to explore ways of expanding Northeastern University’s participation in the SBIR/STTR programs. According to the official U.S. Government SBIR website, “The Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program is a highly competitive program that encourages domestic small businesses to engage in Federal Research/Research and Development (R/R&D) that has the potential for commercialization. Through a competitive awards-based program, SBIR enables small businesses to explore their technological potential and provides the incentive to profit from its commercialization.” The Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program is similar to the SBIR program, but requires companies to team with universities. Since 1983, Massachusetts companies have won 18,906 awards for a total of nearly $4.6B. On average since that time, Massachusetts received 650 awards per year and is second only to California. The workshop will start with an overview of the SBIR/STTR program, first from the perspective of the Department of Defense (DOD), followed by the National Institute of Health (NIH). There will be a discussion of ways NU can expand its activity in the SBIR/STTR space. Contact: Karen Drew 617-373-4824
