It’s similar to TV’s American Idol, but with entrepreneurs rather than singers and celebrities. This annual event attracts entrepreneurs and investors, business and community leaders, and professional service providers for high-quality interactions leading to investments and economic growth. Three early-stage tech entrepreneurs seeking investment deliver their elevator pitches to an investor panel and the audience. After judges’ comments, everyone votes. A new Ben Franklin Venture Idol is announced and awarded a $5,000 investment in the company.

Rabbi Gershom Sizomu Lecture: Community Development and Abayudaya Music

Rabbi Gershom Sizomu is the spiritual leader of the Abayudaya Jews of Uganda. The Abayudaya Jewish Community is a community of over 1,000 Jews living among 10,000 Christians and Muslims. Singing accompanied by drums has been a major component of worship for the Abayudaya, music that was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005. During this public lecture, Rabbi Sizomu will discuss community development efforts, including microfinance and health projects, and perfom Abayudaya songs. The event is free and open to the public.

LEHIGH VALLEY STARTUP WEEKEND

One of the nation’s premier entrepreneurship events, Startup Weekends draw entrepreneurs, inventors, product developers, business owners, and others to pitch their ideas and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54-hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekend culminates with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.
