Much to the chagrin of Petula Clark and other downtown enthusiasts, the Brookings Institute released a study today showing that the lights are getting brighter in the suburbs, not the city. In fact, between 1998 and 2006, 95 out of 98 Metro areas saw a decrease in the share of jobs located within three miles of downtown.
Brookings applied this study to the current economic activities on Capitol Hill, suggesting the geographic distribution of jobs in the country should be taken into consideration when developing economic recovery policy issues, especially as Metro areas work toward sustainable growth.
