It is well known to readers of this blog that the last five years have seen a whole new wave of players in the entrepreneurial ecosphere. What was once limited to Northern California and Boston is now more mainstream. Startup Weekend, Startup Digest, Techstars, Kauffman Labs, the Kairos Society and others are all adding new knowledge to the entrepreneurship education textbook challenging us to take a fresh look at their thinking and approach – something not new to most entrepreneurs.
The founders of the Extreme Entrepreneurship Tour will host an event next month to challenge all players in the space called the Future of Entrepreneurship Education Summit. The man behind the effort, entrepreneur Michael Simmons, calls it 'the Clinton Global Initiative for entrepreneurship education.' I will participate. I am not sure if Michael can match the Clinton Global Initiative the first time around, but I applaud his ambition and this is definitely worth a look.
The Summit, scheduled for February 18 at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, will include more than 20 top U.S. entrepreneurs such as the founders of Red Box and Priceline.com, as well as entrepreneurship champions such as:

  • Kevin Langley, Chairman-Elect, EO
  • David Cohen, Founder, TechStars
  • Ellen Thrasher, Director, Entrepreneurship Education, Small Business Administration
  • Steve Mariotti, Founder, Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship

Simmons describes the objectives of the event as: catalyzing new partnerships; showcasing new innovations; highlighting success stories/; and, helping fund innovation. As with Global Entrepreneurship Week/USA’s own gatherings of similar folks, I think the most important value of such events is for the entrepreneurship education specialists to listen to real entrepreneurs.
Rumor has it that the gathering in Orlando is a warm up for an even bigger event on entrepreneurship education to be convened as part of GEW/USA. Stay tuned to this blog for updates on this new GEW featured event.
